Ernesto Pérez, Local Guide

Languages: Spanish and English

Ernesto Pérez, a biologist at heart and a naturalist since childhood, ventured into the thrilling world of nature photography when he received his first digital camera during the final semesters of his biology studies. Since 2017, he has passionately led expeditions as a birdwatching guide, starting in the magnificent Baja California Peninsula. From 2020 onward, he expanded his territory to take bird enthusiasts on exciting birdwatching trips in central Mexico, exploring regions such as Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Guerrero. His specialization lies in the beautiful state of Guerrero, where he has become an expert in organizing tours designed to spot and photograph the Short-crested Coquette, a hummingbird species endemic to the Sierra de Atoyac and critically endangered according to the IUCN.

Ernesto's goal is to ensure that birdwatchers and nature photographers have the best possible experience getting to know the birds, sharing their love and knowledge of birds and nature, and, through these experiences, being able to contribute to the conservation of species that provide us with many benefits—in other words, photographing for conservation.

I contacted Ernesto and challenged him to find the Short-crested Coquette which is a micro-endemic and critically endangered species in Mexico. He found it and to this day we have the best detailed photos of the species ever taken. Both of our photos are displayed on the species page on eBird. Thank you Ernesto for taking on such a challenge and succeeding my expectations!
