Turning Hummingbird Photography into Conservation Awareness

Anthony Lujan Returns to the Sedona Hummingbird Festival in 2027

Award-winning author, hummingbird photographer, and conservation advocate Anthony Lujan will return to the Sedona Hummingbird Festival in 2027 with a new presentation exploring how hummingbird photography can become a powerful tool for conservation awareness.

Turning Hummingbird Photography into Conservation Awareness takes audiences beyond the photograph to explore what happens after the camera shutter clicks and how a single encounter with an endangered hummingbird can lead to education, advocacy, fundraising, and meaningful conservation action.

Drawing from his firsthand experiences photographing endangered hummingbirds throughout the Americas, Anthony will share the stories behind two remarkable species, the critically endangered Chilean Woodstar and Short-crested Coquette.

Through his photography, video footage, published books, articles, media coverage, and direct involvement in conservation initiatives, Anthony will illustrate how his work has evolved from documenting these extraordinary birds to helping raise awareness of the challenges threatening their survival.

What You'll Discover

  • Beyond the Photograph: How photographing endangered hummingbirds can open the door to conservation storytelling and advocacy.

  • Stories from the Field: Personal experiences photographing the Chilean Woodstar and Short-crested Coquette and learning about the threats they face.

  • Creating Conservation Awareness: How books, photography, publications, presentations, and media exposure can bring greater attention to endangered species.

  • Turning Awareness into Action: A look at conservation projects, habitat protection, restoration efforts, fundraising, and partnerships that extend well beyond photography.

  • Making a Difference: How photographers and hummingbird enthusiasts can use their own interests, talents, and voices to support conservation.

Featuring stunning hummingbird photography, field video footage, published work, and behind-the-scenes conservation stories, this presentation offers a personal look at how a passion for hummingbirds can grow into a commitment to protecting them.

Because sometimes the most important part of a photograph is what happens after it is taken.
