DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF HUMMINGBIRDS
Anthony Lujan
Hummingbird Photographer | Award-winning Author | Conservation Advocate
Hummingbirds span 365 species across the Americas, each adapted to its own habitat, elevation, and ecosystem. From tropical rainforests to cloud forests and mountain slopes, these remarkable birds display an extraordinary range of color, form, and behavior. Anthony’s work documents this diversity through photography, highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of hummingbirds throughout the New World.
Anthony’s mission is to photograph and document the hummingbirds of the Americas, one species at a time. To date, he has photographed 246 species, characterizing roughly 67% of all known hummingbird species. With each journey across the Americas, that number keeps growing as he documents these remarkable birds in their natural habitats. Many of the species Anthony photographs are endemic or endangered hummingbirds, highlighting the importance of conservation.
Hummingbird Conservation
Fifty-eight hummingbird species are currently classified by the IUCN Red List as facing a risk of extinction. Some have been reduced to only a few hundred individuals, while others are believed to number fewer than 50.
For Anthony, helping protect hummingbirds has become a deeply personal mission. His passion is focused on giving species living on the narrowest margins a fighting chance through direct financial support for on-the-ground conservation, habitat restoration, population monitoring, research, and conservation education.
Through personal contributions, conservation advocacy, and support for the organizations and researchers carrying out this work in the field, Anthony is helping move critical projects forward where these species still survive.
These hummingbirds are still here. The mission is to help keep them from becoming species we talk about in the past tense.
